Meet Fanny Goldstein, a fifty-year-old virgin who doesn't want to die wondering what she has missed. Although this novel is a comic parody of modern values and its superficial pleasures, it is far more than a funny story. Society would call Fanny and her friends misfits, but their love for each other lends them great dignity.
The story opens the day of the San Francisco earthquake in 1989. Fanny is a librarian, dominated by her demanding, unsympathetic mother. She is short, plump and socially backward. Yet, she is also generous and caring - so much so that everyone who knows her loves her. After the earthquake, Fanny returns home from the library to find her mother dead and herself a millionaire. Her mother willed Fanny all her assets including her lover, Hymie, and her dog, William. We follow Fanny through a year with her two legacies and see the unexpected ways she learns that being a fulfilled human being does not involve dropping her pants as much as it demands that she open her heart.
Reviews of "The Late Bloomer"

"Lynn Ruth Miller's done it again: our unlikely 50 year-old heroine finds love and fulfillment thanks to an earthquake, a virtual mute and a frustrated fashionisto. And that's just the beginning. A lesson to all of us to get pull ourselves out of our rut, (or the library, as the case may be), and go for it! Never has food been so deftly described - never have fad diets been so mercilessly dissed - never has the Easter egg hunt of love been so amusingly presented."
Mary S. Bacigalupi
Los Gatos Poet Laureate, Host of tv's "Outside the Box"

I loved this book. I found the characters to be as real and eccentric as many of my own friends. Fanny, much like the author, Lynn Ruth, had the insight to see what people were beneath their woes and accepted them whole heartedly with a loving heart. This book is a real find.”
Rose M. Taylor,
Author, “Your Conflict, Your Resolution”

“What a hoot!  A charming urban tale and a welcome relief from heavy-handed mysteries and miseries. Fanny and her soul mates push Pollyanna into the twentieth century.”

If you want to add some real bloom to your life, you owe it to yourself to read ‘The Late Bloomer.’ I laughed; I cried and felt my heart warming up in gratitude for this wonderful story by Lynn Ruth Miller.”

No one tells a story better than Lynn Ruth Miller. And in ‘The Late Bloomer,’ she outdoes herself. She finds the best stories, adds the best humor, and mixes the right emotion, and viola, her most interesting recipe. ‘The Late Bloomer’ is a must read for those of us who love a good story told with light humor and grand emotion.”

Past president of CAMFT, California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists

From the Fans...
I loved ‘The Late Bloomer.’  Each person came alive for me and I could even see myself, living in such a home as was created at the end. You are a treasure.”

Lynn Ruth Miller has created in Fanny a funny and charming portrayal of a woman who speaks to all of us.  For those of us stuck in a society where output and efficiency is all that matters, Fanny shares with us a delightful story of what is it to be truly human.  It really is a wonderful book and so funny and sad at the same time.”
Regina Deihl, J.D., El Granada, CA

“I finished reading ‘The Late Bloomer’.  I loved it I could hardly put it down.”
Flo Wolin, Portsmouth, VA

“I had such a good feeling when I finished your novel that I refused to read any other works of fiction for over a week, because I wanted to hold onto that feeling.  I love the family that Fanny made for herself.  Also, you should write a screenplay for Late Bloomer, because the story and characters would transfer nicely to film, I believe.”

“Many of us, for whatever reason, have tried to be someone we are not, and find great peace in returning to who we really are.  Can Fanny do this? Fanny's journey to break free from the ties that bind is a fascinating and heartwarming adventure.  It will keep you reading to find out what craziness she will think of next, or how far she will go to achieve her sometimes questionable goals.  Her dog and her collection of friends add flavor and humor to this great story.”
Nancy McAdoo, Virginia Beach, VA

I just finished ‘The Late Bloomer’ and it was sooooooooooooooooooooo good....I am just beside myself...Any more books with Fanny??? I'm going to miss her so much...I was in the book with her and watching from the outside all at the same time... As I went around doing my business, I would see something and think ‘Fanny would LOVE this’ If you are going to write characters this real to me, you must write more soon, it's not fair not to....”
Joni Rogers

“You will fall in love with Fanny Goldstein and her unlikely entourage! Any woman creeping up on middle-middle age with a longing for adventure and change will enjoy this romp! AND, the recipes are SPECTACULAR!"

“I just finished your book!  If Donald is based on a real person, could you give him my number? (Just kidding.) So far, my favorite line in the book is when Fergus cries onto his sandals and the tears bounce off. It kind of reminds me of some of Louisa May Alcott's books--she would have a character making some dramatic, tear-soaked confession, but throw in some little detail like that to turn the tragedy into comedy. Anyhow, Loved your characters, and look forward to my second reading!”
